The Red Flag tradition in the Nation of Islam and Moorish Science Temple
Hi Patrick - I am a French scholar specialized in Arab American history. I have also written a couple of articles on the US Muslim community. I don't know if you have ever seen the series called "American Crime" (season 1)which came out in 2015. It's a great series which focuses on race/class relations. One of the characters is Aliyah (played by Regina King) who is a very devout convert to Islam. What is interesting about this series is that no mention is made of the NOI,but in episode 6, the red flag is briefly visible when Aliyah goes to the mosque (temple?). Also, interesting is the fact that the media and the actress herself refer to Aliyah as "a Muslim woman" when, as is commonly known, US Muslims are overwhelmingly foreign-born and "orthodox" believers...
